Mestic®
A method for creating paper, bioplastic and textiles made from cow-manure.
Intensive farming in many parts of the world oversaturates the soil with nutrients from manure. This excess manure is an acute problem which need to be dealt with in order to avoid environmental catastrophes. Eindhoven designer Jalila Essaidi has turned manure into haute couture, creating a manure-based fabric that has been used to make clothes. With this innovation we start with shit, and turn it into something beautiful. Mestic is a novel and economically viable method for producing manure-derived paper; cellulose acetate; and viscose or similar fibres. Providing local farmers with an economic incentive to increase the quality of their cow’s food in order to increase the cellulose content of manure and with it animal welfare; methane gas production is reduced; and contamination of our soil and waters are prevented. By implementing Mestic Essaidi will turn the global manure problem into a new sustainable and local source of raw biodegradable materials for the make industry.
