3D Design Problem Bank
A system that turns students into empowered and empathetic community problem solvers.
I have created an initiative in which people post problems in need of a designed solution to a "3D Design Problem Bank", and students become the designers, engineers, and inventors who solve the problem using 3D printing. Students begin by interviewing the "problem poster" in order to better understand the person and their needs. They they prototype using conventional materials (cardboard, clay, etc.), and begin iterating solutions, regularly sharing each increasingly improved version. What started as a tool involving students in the solving of teachers' problems has evolved into an incredibly powerful community designing movement. Recent exciting directions include students designing activity specific devices for a child at our school with an upper limb difference and a profound design collaboration between our students and partners at a seniors' residence - a project that now involves all 6th graders. I believe every 3D printer should also have an accompanying Problem Bank!
