SHISHU
Bundles simple, low-cost tools to prevent and treat the main causes of neonatal mortality
Nearly one third of all neonatal deaths worldwide occur in India – 75% of these deaths occur in the early neonatal period (first 7 days of life). “SHISHU” (Healthy newborn kit) is an ecosystem of advocacy and practice designed to affect behavior change towards adherence to globally recommended best care practices by improving access to essential newborn care in areas with high infant mortality rates. The kit “bundles” low-cost components proven to prevent infection, hypothermia and asphyxia (the 3 main causes of neonatal mortality) and include: a disposable baby wiping cloth, cotton/gauze, receiving blanket, and Chlorhexidine (proper hygiene); a dress, hat, and blanket with hood (proper thermal care); and a mucous extractor (proper breathing). The kit also provides essential education tools, including a breastfeeding guide for healthcare providers and the mother, as well as culturally relevant, cutting-edge mobile phone training on importance and use of each component.
