Visual communication for the Illiterates in Port of Manaus, Brazil

There are 500,000 illiterate people in the Fluvial System of the Amazon region, Brazil. The majority of these people had trouble using Port of Manaus ferry services, which was a large problem because the ferry services are an essential transport system in the region.

Written communication and text signs are replaced by visual communication, for example with the colors of the rainbow denoting the three largest rivers. In addition, ticket offices and ferries were painted different colors to be more conspicuous. From your ticket, you can tell which color ferry to look for and you can follow colored lines on the port's piers.
