PELAGIC INTERCEPTOR
PELAGIC INTERCEPTOR - Pasively operated Dispersed Oceanic Pollutant Interception System
The PELAGIC INTERCEPTOR is a Design strategy initiated in 2011 that engages with dispersed synthetic pollutants in oceans through utilization of currents, winds and waves that passively operate swarms of interceptors. The specific porous design of interceptors allows semi permeability and flux through the structure, enabling selective interception of pollutants in various stages. The hollow and floating interceptor units are made of calcium and host an ecology of microorganisms that neutralize intercepted pollutants. Once the caring capacity of the unit is reached after intercepting and neutralizing up to 10 tonnes of dispersed pollutants it sinks to to the ocean bottom where units enter the secondary phase by forming off shore reefs, providing habitat and forming nurseries aquatic for plants and animals. This dispersed open water nursery offers an alternative to intense and damaging aqua farming by replenishing natural levels and promoting biodiversity.
