Great Wrap
The only compostable cling wrap made from food waste
How does it work?
Great Wrap is a revolutionary stretch wrap material made from potato waste. Behind the design is a team of bio-designers, engineers and scientists that have developed a new paradigm of packaging technology that enables them to manufacture compostable stretch wrap. The materials perform the same as conventional plastic but will break down in under 180 days. Great Wrap is 100% compostable, meaning it will add organic matter to your compost pile leaving no microplastics behind. Their products are made from the best materials possible, every day. They believe true innovation happens on a molecular level. The materials we touch and feel must be redesigned from the beginning. Currently, Great Wrap use the starch from potato waste, in the future they will continue to innovate utilising the greatest technology available.
Why is it needed?
The rapidly changing world of packaging is intimidating for both businesses and consumers. No one wants to do the wrong thing and cause more harm than good. Great Wrap are closing the loop on our systems so that fossil fuels and intensive agriculture are no longer a part of the international production landscape. The by-product of the food waste conversion Great Wrap is working on will be a soil and marine degradable natural plastic solution. Compostable packaging breaks down into carbon and water leaving no toxins behind and it’s made mostly from plants.Biodegradable packaging is made from petroleum like regular plastic but has an organic additive that enables it to break down very easily when exposed to sunlight and moisture. The problem is that it will only break down to smaller pieces of plastic or microplastics which are inherently bad for the planet.
How does it improve life?
1/3 of the world’s food is wasted, amounting to 1.3 billion tonnes of food waste every year. These high quantities of waste going to landfill leads to rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions. If you don’t already compost, it’s time to start. Composting sequesters carbon from the atmosphere in turn helping to offset your own carbon footprint. No matter what your living situation is like there’s a composting solution available for you. Great Wrap has been tried and tested under strict lab conditions to global standards. It is 100% compostable and it will break down in under 180 days in a home compost system.
