Outside the Box
Type 2 diabetes education and self treatment
How does it work?
Outisde the Box is a wooden box of 30 illustrated cards. It's meant to be gifted with new medication for Type 2 diabetes patients. On the cards, QR codes connect to an interactive experience that patients are invited to try daily to help them change direction to a healthier way of living and create a positive mind shift for tackling diabetes and heart-related health challenges. Examples include motion-activated podcasts where users have to keep walking to keep listening; a scented card with an online meditation session for improved sleep and a scratch card to keep track of water intake.
Why is it needed?
More than 37 million Americans have diabetes (about 1 in 10), and approximately 90-95 per cent of them have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes most often develops in people over age 45, but more and more children, teens, and young adults are also developing it (CDC). The number of young people with the most prevalent form of diabetes nearly doubled in the United States from 2001 to 2017, according to a study published by Reuters in 2021. The findings showed that the rate of young people ages 10 to 19 with type 2 diabetes increased by 95 per cent over the 16-year period. The estimated rate of youth under age 20 with type 1 diabetes grew by 45 per cent.
How does it improve life?
Each interactive experience enables users to discuss and share progress with their doctors and reflect upon their learnings.
