The high-frequency rocket
Countering swarms of crickets ruining crops with a rocket
How does it work?
This new system, housed within an aerodynamic rocket, produces high-frequency sounds that disturb insects! The entire system is carried by a drone into the vast desert areas that are difficult to access for people.
Why is it needed?
Desert locust, which occurs in various parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, is considered the most destructive migratory pest worldwide. As locusts swarm, they can destroy crops, pasture, and fodder in large areas. A small swarm can consume the same amount of food in one day as 35,000 people, while a large swarm can eat food that could feed 81 million people.
How does it improve life?
Imagined, designed and produced in the FabLab by a 23-year-old, the next version of the prototype rocket will use solar energy.
