Ropot
A small robot guiding small kids to a safe walk to and from school
How does it work?
Ropot is a small palm-sized robot that gives traffic advice to kids walking to and from school. It's role is to "encourage children to confirm safety." In order to fulfil its important task, this small robot is packed with various functions. E.g. when approaching a road crossing point set by a guardian in advance, the GPS-equipped Ropot vibrates the body. The vibration reminds the children, "I have to stop here and check the left and right." In addition, Ropot also has a vehicle detection sensor, so when it detects an approaching vehicle from behind, it vibrates and prompts for safety confirmation. In addition, users can check what route they walked and whether they stopped properly at the safety confirmation point. After returning home, parents and children can look back on the day's commuting to and from school together.
Why is it needed?
There are many traffic accidents involving pedestrians, especially children. Among them, it is said that many traffic accidents affect kids around the age of 7 or in the first grade of elementary school, who start going to and from school alone. Furthermore, it is considered that the cause of this, is that children have only about two-thirds of the field of vision of adults and it is difficult to notice the danger.
How does it improve life?
Ropot was born at Honda R & D and is currently under research and development. In December 2020, Honda conducted a demonstration experiment to verify the usability and usefulness of Ropot with the cooperation of elementary schools such as Wako City.
