Resting Reefs
Artificial, eco-positive reefs from cremated ashes
How does it work?
Resting Reefs is a meaningful memorial service and burial that regenerates marine biodiversity, sequesters carbon, filters water and prevents coastal erosion.
Potential users can design their own oyster capsule, select the location of it and plan their ceremony. It gives the loved ones the possibility to follow the progress online and the positive impact being generated from the reef
Why is it needed?
According to Resting Reefs website, a typical cremation has a footprint equivalent to about 400kgs of CO2. In the UK, it equals 158,000 metric tons of CO2 a year, which is the same as burning 79 million kg of coal. On top of that, there is deforestation, excess use of polluting materials, and toxic embalming fluids that find their way into the groundwater.
Resting Reefs wants to tackle both the problem of an incredible polluting industry and the marine ecosystems crisis.
How does it improve life?
The capsules come with many benefits; shelter and habitat for marine species; filter sediments, heavy metals and excess fertiliser from the coast; increase biodiversity; filter water, positively affecting overall water quality; carbon offset from your oyster settlement.
The economic value that ‘restored and protected oyster reefs’ provide, ranges between £7,630 and £73,473 a year.
