Learning Matters
Empower children & teachers in a digital world by designing low-tech & low-cost learning interfaces
Digital tools, mainly in the shape of slick and rigid screens, lack sensitivity. These high-tech tools do not, therefore promote active learning in young children. Designing new learning experiences thanks to embedded and manipulative technologies could help teachers to improve quality and access to education for young children. By associating textiles & electronics, Learning Matter offers a new paradigm: creating low-tech & low-cost digital interfaces integrating the sensitive properties of touch. Textiles, whose materiality is close to the skin, have intrinsic haptic properties highly appreciated by toddlers. Fostering an exploratory approach, children assemble hands-on circuits designed to demystify ‘black boxes’. Easily accessible, these open-source systems promote quality education that meets the challenges of digital literacy. The electronic-textile symbiosis supports playful and embodied interaction of teachers and toddlers through sensitive gestures combined with active touch.
