Nova Biodegradable Children's Footwear
Nova is a biodegradable shoe for children that is designed to break down after use in one year.
Americans throw away 300 million pairs of shoes each year. Each pair takes an average of 30 to 40 years to decompose while releasing harmful chemicals into the environment. Between the ages of 2 - 6, children will need a new pair of shoes about every 3 - 6 months because of foot growth or wear and tear. By using biomaterials, Nova breaks down faster after use than traditional footwear, does not cause harmful effects on the environment like traditional footwear, and does all this without sacrificing the functionality of traditional footwear. Nova is composed of three biomaterials: a spider silk fiber upper dyed using all-natural pigments, polylactic acid grommets, and self-fastening staps, and a mycelium composite sole. The shoe design focuses on durability, stability, and easy removability through its functional form designs and the choice of these biomaterials. Nova provides children with a stable everyday shoe and, after it is outgrown, it is disposed of with no negative impact.
