Solar Fruit Drying
Solar drying to reduce post-harvest losses for small-hold farmers in Africa
In Africa, 500 million smallholding farmers lose 15% of their income to post harvest food losses. This project aims to reduce these post harvest food losses through fruit drying. By drying the produce, the shelf life of the crop is greatly increased and the food is prevented from simply going to waste in storage. The smallholding farmers will be able to utilise the drying process when they have an excess of harvest, or produce which is too large, small or misshapen. The increased shelf life also enables the farmers to sell their produce when the market is suitable; this means a higher sales price and more control for the farmer. This project is a collaboration with Alvan Blanch, a world-leader in the crop processing sector and already well-established in Africa.
