Saccharina
The Saccharina enables an efficient and non intrusive/destructive seaweed farm harvesting.
The Saccharina is a machine that pulls seaweed, grown on ropes, through it’s spinning inner and “shaves” off the seaweed from the ropes. The challenge is to remove the seaweed from the ropes without damaging the crop nor the rope and thus contaminating the harvest. The product is currently in the prototype phase.
This project is aimed at medium sized seaweed operations, wishing to equip them with user-friendly and efficient tools, that do not disturb the local ecosystem.
In Denmark a small seaweed company was planting the biggest saccharina japonica
farm (in Denmark) yet. The seaweed from that farm is to be processed and sold as high
protein feed to local ecological pig farms. One day maybe it will reach your local supermarket as a protein rich salad.
