SONGDO INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS DISTRICT
Built from scratch on reclaimed land from the sea, Songdo IBD is a smart city of the future.
Call it ‘The City of the Future’, ‘The World’s Smartest City’ or ‘Korea’s High-Tech Utopia,’ Songdo International Business District is still under construction to be completed by 2018, but most of the infrastructure is in place and over 60,000 people currently live there. Built from scratch on 1,500 acres of land reclaimed from the the Yellow Sea, Songdo is the only city in the world where all buildings will meet LEED requirements. The green area accounts for over 40% of the area of the city, which is mainly covered by the 100-acre central park. The city is a pedestrian city, and cars are entirely unnecessary. The prominent smart features of the city are its waste management system, energy efficiency, and high-end technology to monitor and regulate everything from temperature to energy consumption and traffic, making the city ‘a living organism’ in many ways.
