I Love Coffee Shop
I Love Coffee re-imagines coffee spaces to break down communication barriers and create employment
All the social challenges facing South Africa's 2 million Deaf citizens, from unemployment to marginalization, stem from the lack of recognition of South African Sign Language as an official language. Also people have a natural fear of embarrassing themselves or others through miscommunication. An I Love Coffee cafe is designed to offer a welcoming cafe experience that encourages both customers and staff to try and bridge communication barriers. Counters are writing surfaces. Menus are positioned in a way to maintain eye contact and allow for pointing. Videos teaching coffee signs play on loops. Most customers master ordering a coffee in a few seconds and over time ask to learn other signs. Wooden dice on the table turn ordering into a fun "game". Communication leads to integration. Customers recognise abilities over disabilities. Staff develop the skills and self-awareness to explore further work or study opportunities with new found confidence and life experience.
