New Urban Armature for the Greater Ouarzazate
URBAN DESIGN FOCUSED ON TERRITORIAL STRATEGIES TO DEVELOP SOLIDARY AND SUSTAINABLE OASIS CITY
The project comprises territorial strategies and urban development tools for future solidary and sustainable living spaces in Ouarzazate, Morocco. Overall, the development of efficient and sustainable living spaces is not a common topic addressed in that region, therefore our international group wanted to reclaim it. The territory of Greater Ouarzazate is unique in terms of historical identity (conglomerate of historical sites, heritage buildings and landscapes which are marked by a rich film history) and good practices of sustainable models of living (advanced solar energy complex, agricultural economy, knowledge of building with ecological materials and technologies). This area has immense potential for becoming exemplary case of sustainable development and prototype of architecture of the commons. However, three main challenges needed to be addressed: lack of holistic vision, loss of local knowledge and pressure on the eco-system.
