INNER VALUES
Benches out of tanned animal offals uncover true value and potential of this supposed waste material
Due to livestock farming and industrial slaughter methods the prices for animal products decreased extremely. As a result only the tastiest and easiest to prepare parts of an animal are actually used. Today less then half of an animal is really further processed after slaughter, while all the rest goes to rendering plants and thus more or less directly to the garbage can.
But are such slaughter by-products really nothing more than waste? Is our rejective attitude towards these materials justified? Or shouldn’t we, if we really have to kill an animal, at least appreciate all of its resources instead?
These questions have given rise to the INNER VALUES project. I designed two benches out of tanned and further processed cow-intestines and pig-bladders, transformed to soft seating leather. Thereby the supposed waste products are getting valorized and become something inviting, supple and beautiful. The furnitures reveal the unique quality and potential of this underestimated materials.
