Picterus
Picterus is an app for monitoring jaundice in new-borns.
Jaundice is a medical condition that usually causes yellowing of the skin. If the condition is left untreated it can lead to permanent brain damage and even death. An estimated 114.000 newborns die from jaundice every year. Statistically, more than three quarters of these deaths occur in low and middle income countries, since the diagnostic devices typically used to detect Jaundice are too expensive. In addition, the shortened stays at maternity wards after birth in high income countries has created a demand for more distributed technologies for managing Jaundice. Picterus; an app for monitoring Jaundice in newborns is based on cutting edge biomedical optics. The app provides the best possible estimates of Jaundice level while at the same time calibrating for skin pigmentation. The solution is low in cost, since the only external part need is a printed paper card, therefore making it available for the whole world.
