The Waterfront Tanks
adaptive design that re-uses abandoned oil silos
The Waterfront Tanks project is an adaptive design that re-uses abandoned oil silos.
The design anticipates and makes positive use of a post-petroleum future in which oil refineries and silos are obsolete. After a deep-clean that involves bioremediation - a process of using naturally occurring organisms to sterilise toxic substances - the tank’s structure and surface are expertly analysed. The Waterfront Tanks project then proposes a ‘peeling’ of the surfaces, adapting each level and providing additional space and function for human use. By adapting existing harmful structures, The Waterfront Tanks project transforms sites of waste and pollution into lively, communal spaces.
