Playful yet sophisticated, the entrance lobby of a private residence in Bangkok is enriched by a coexistence of old and new components, both displaying multi-cultural aspects through contemporary craftsmanship. A combination of Thai style wooden furniture, so-called ‘kha singh’, and embroidered flower petal backdrop wall define the atmosphere. As focal points for the scheme, the partitions utilize a sequence of tiny dots that develop a perception of rhomboidal grids. This technique recalls the art of ‘sashiko’, a traditional Japanese form of stitching meant to repair worn portions of fabric with new threads and patches. Here, the process allows the implementation of colorful cotton yarn sewed randomly between each perforation to articulate vivid flower petal motif. The coexistence of old and new and the multi-cultural aspects creates a new identity and makes this space lively.
