KATAIX:SeaAirbag
32,000 fishermen lose their lives annually in the world (ILO), we change that reality through design
KATAIX started in 2010 with an earthquake and tsunami off the Chilean coast. As a volunteer to help the most affected fishermen, I realized the precarious conditions of their workplace threatening their safety on a daily basis. What I found most impressive is that most of the fishermen did not even know how to swim. I dedicate my final project as a designer to improve these working conditions. The standard uniform is a lifejacket, rarely used, as they are uncomfortable to work in. KATAIX worked collaboratively with fishermen to find our solution—together we have designed an automatic buoyancy integrated work suit that allows fishermen to work comfortably and safely. The inflatable vest is activated when someone falls into the water, and corrects the victim’s position to free airways. When inactive, the buoyancy system is like wearing a standard fishing suit—light comfortable and allows for full range of motion. We are a formal company since 2014, promoting decent and safe work at sea.
