Hack-a-bench is part of the government’s art bench project in 20 different parks in Hong Kong. Instead of parachuting new alien object into the bench-filled park, the idea is to apply a new method to public design. The idea is to replace the existing backrest and armrest (anti-homeless device) from ten of the standard benches in the park, with new wavy elements that were designed together with different users (children, parents, elderly and domestic helpers). With a design probe that includes a 1:10 model bench, a series of sushi mats, we have our new benches.
