3D Printed Manual centrifuge
A manually operated centrifuge based off of the common salad spinner for international CDC labs.
For the project, our design team was asked by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Bacterial Diseases (DBD) to improve the design of a manual centrifuge in international health laboratories.
It is a manual version that enables safe biological processing in low-resource health labs across the world. It consists of three components, connected through a 3D-printed hub.
Attached to one side of the hub is a tube holder; attached to the other is a salad spinner. The tube holder comes in 3 sizes (1.5ml, 15ml and 50ml), allowing users to fill the tubes with varying biological specimens that are then spun by the salad spinner.
Each individual component is digitally printed, so parts can easily be replaced if broken or even sent digitally to international maker spaces.
