Working as a volunteer for an ONG in Chile for the 2010 tsunami with the local fisherman community, Amalia, a designer and amateur sailor, realizes that they work very hard in the unpredictable sea, to get financial support to their families. With this in mind, Amalia began to develop a working fishing suit with the fisherman´s feedback. That's how KATAIX: Sea Airbag was born. Our work began with the small communities, but quickly we realized that our design could be useful for different types of fishing industries. Most of fishing crews do not know how to swim and prefer to work with out a life vest, because it´s to uncomfortable while fishing. Our challenge was to design a fishing suit that was confortable, easy to ware and safe at the same time. Kataix, evolved in a fishing suit similar to the one that the fisherman used to ware, with simple but innovative twist, incorporating a layer of buoyancy that only activates when falling off the boat.
