Molecular Plastic Tagging
A global ecosystem where businesses can clean up ocean plastic and send the bill to the manufacturer
This global solution to ocean plastic combines ideas from two different industries, the first is the electricity industry and the second is that of molecular tagging. Unique and very small trace amounts of certain isotopes can be used to create specific identified signatures that are built in to products such as fuels or clothing to prevent their counterfeiting. This happens at gasoline retail outlets all the time to prevent retailers from substituting another brand in place of that advertised. Often these are not additives but actual traceable molecules and atoms built into the chemical structure. The specific model taken from the electricity industry is that of tradable credits such as carbon, renewable energy targets, or sulfur. The intent is to create a global “ecosystem” where businesses can compete to clean up ocean plastic and be properly rewarded for their efforts by closing the loop and insuring that the costs are properly accounted for by the primary plastic manufacturers.
