PermaNet Bed Net to Fight Insecticide Resistance
PermaNet 3.0 bed net fights resistance by mosquitoes to insecticide currently used in bed nets
Long-lasting insecticidal bed nets (LLINs) have contributed to progress against malaria with deaths down 60% since 2000. But a serious problem has emerged: malaria-carrying mosquitoes are increasingly resistant to the only insecticide approved by WHO for use in LLINs and approval of any other insecticide is years away. 60 countries report resistance and malaria is increasing despite increased net use in those areas. The Lancet reported, “the threat of resistance derailing malaria control has become an issue of urgency that can no longer be ignored without risking a global public health catastrophe.” PermaNet 3.0 is the only LLIN approved by WHO for increased efficacy against insecticide resistant mosquitoes. The combination bed net incorporates a synergist (piperonyl butoxide or PBO) with the approved insecticide (deltamethrin) to enhance its effect. PermaNet 3.0 is the optimal choice for areas where mosquitoes have developed resistance to the insecticides used in standard LLINs.
