Junk Kouture
Recycling fashion competition for teenagers
Second-level pupils aged from 13 to 18 are invited to create wearable art and outrageous couture trash fashion. The challenge is to rework junk and other already used materials that are beyond their intended purpose and to craft them into eye-catching bespoke fashion designs. 2016 saw over 1,150 designs submitted. Entrants’ work has appeared on red carpets and catwalks across the world. Junk Kouture inspire creativity in young people and highlights the importance of environmentally aware behaviour and mindfulness of how much we consume and how much we throw away. The students reinvent waste such as old plastics, paper, bottles, wires, lambs’ wool and even hosepipes to turn them into couture.
