Guga S'Thebe Children's Theater
A multipurpose center for the youth in the township Langa in Cape Town
Located in Langa, the oldest township in Cape Town, South Africa, the Guga S’Thebe Children’s Theater is a public space in an area with few community spaces. The theater was built using traditional earth construction techniques along with reused and recycled materials. Made with old shipping containers and wooden pallets, the building features backstage areas, balconies for the audience, a recording studio, and a soup kitchen, along with the central theater.
The successful work with children in drum lessons, dance workshops and public concerts will be supported and extended by the new building.
A combination of singular rooms for playing music in small groups and a large multipurpose space that can host performances and concerts will widen the experiential possibilities for children and young adults and stimulate the sustainable development within the community.
