Politics of Power
A conceptual design which explores how different ideologies impact daily life
Politics of Power is a conceptual design project that uses an ubiquitous everyday product, the multi-plug, as the medium through which to explore how different ideologies impact daily life. Three plugs—Models D, M, and T—were designed to behave based on distinct power structures. By plugging in a small appliance like a light or a fan, users can experience the politics built into each plug. For example, if the topmost plug on the Model T plug (meant to represent the leader) is not plugged in, the bottom plug points will respond haphazardly, representing political chaos. The project’s central metaphor questions the underlying decisions that create products, recognizing that these decisions are made within a biased power structure.
