BEMPU Hypothermia Alert Device
Protects critical newborns from hypothermia in low-resource countries, promoting healthy growth.
Management of hypothermia for low-weight babies is essential to their life & overall growth. In developing regions like India, it is neglected due to understaffed clinics & uneducated parents, leaving 12 million newborns vulnerable & unmonitored per year, as they get discharged at as low-weights of 1 - 1.5 kg due to resource constraints. First-hand observation of this problem in field research with 120 pediatricians motivated us to design BEMPU device that protects newborns from hypothermia & infection, & is universally adoptable by illiterate or unskilled users. It is a wrist worn bracelet that continuously monitors baby’s temperature & creates an audio-visual alarm during hypothermia, empowering the mother to give warmth by Kangaroo-Mother-Care leading to healthy growth & development of the newborn. Within 2 months of launch BEMPU is used by 50 centers in India protecting 500+ babies to date. In 3 years we plan to be the standard of care protecting 150,000 babies in India alone.
