Wind turbines and solar panels turn viaduct into energy generator
A proposed bridge concept that incorporates both solar panels and wind turbines into its structure could generate as much as 40 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. The hybrid system proposes to combine solar and wind power generators, allowing for a continuous production of energy. the product is based on the idea of utilizing the space between the pillars of the existing viaducts to house a system of wind-powered turbines which will be integrated into the structure. this ensures the use of contained land and therefore, a reduced impact on both landscape and environment in addition to re-designing the visual profile of the viaduct. The designers also propose to place a park across the top of the viaduct which would feature solar greenhouses and panoramic viewpoints. The outer carriageway would remain accessible by vehicles, but the tarmac would be substituted with solar panels comprised of a dense grid of solar cells covered with highly resistant plastic.
