HandpaintedType
A Project Dedicated To Preserving The Typographic Practice Of Street Painters Around India.
HandpaintedType project involves documenting the Typefaces of road-side painters across India and digitizing them so that it serves as a resource for present and future generations, thus preserving the Visual Heritage of India. The project highlights hidden talent of the very experienced Indian Sign Painters. The project has changed the lives of many Sign Painters. One of them is Painter Kafeel from old Delhi, a very talented Typographer whose skills were never appreciated in 25 years of his painting career. After the digitization of his Font, his style became really popular, both in India and abroad. His clientele upgraded to people who appreciated his work internationally. This improved his financial condition in a major way. Apart from preserving the indigenous practices of Street Painters, & helping them from going out-of job, HandpaintedType project continues to contribute immensely in preserving the Visual Culture of India. This film explains the Sign Painters' situation.
