Elephant tap
Hygiene advancing tap that supports children’s development by improving hand washing in schools
Each year, 272 million school days are missed due to diarrhea. More than 40% of those cases result from transmissions in schools. The most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea is hand washing with soap. The Elephant tap is hard wearing product that can be retrofitted to most hand washing tanks. The product is designed for mass-production in developing countries. Each push dispenses 250ml of water, lasting approximately 30 seconds. This simple action conserves water, prevents hand re-contamination and passively teaches user the correct amount of time to wash their hands. The first design of the tap was co-created between academia, UNICEF and school communities in Uganda. One of the key challenges was identified: stolen, broken or locked taps. In addition, the functioning taps were often left running after children flashed their hands in the. A smaller design team took the lessons learned from the pilot testing and continued developing the tap.
